The drive belt may be on the pulley but so worn or stretched that it won’t engage fully. A worn or stretched belt can easily slip on the pulley. The belt may also have slipped off the pully. A Craftsman lawn mower isn’t getting fuel when bad fuel is causing fuel restrictions, the fuel filter is plugged, the fuel lines are clogged, the fuel pump failed, the carburetor is dirty or the fuel cap vent is plugged. The usual symptoms of excessive clutch air gap are 1) Won't engage at all. 2) Engages slowly (no distinct clunk) 3) Won't stay engaged under a load (less than 1 minute).
